Our Mission

Gardens Off Drugs, a group founded in 2000 to advocate for a ban on the cosmetic use of pesticides in Oakville, is pleased that Oakville's Town council has voted to enact an excellent bylaw that will take effect January 1 2008. We thank our mayor and councillors for listening to the facts, paying attention to the serious concerns of health officials about the dangerous effects of pesticides, and making a wise decision. The group will continue to advocate for regional and provincial regulation on these dangerous chemicals. If you would like to help us in that effort please contact Renee Lehnen at 905-339-2290. And please enjoy this site that offers information on how to maintain healthy, beautiful gardens without harmful chemicals.

Our Founding

Gardens Off Drugs is a grassroots organization that was founded by Tania Orton and her friends Jan Doholis, Deanna Beach, Karen Sandford, Edith Cunningham, Rosemarie Green, Renee Lehnen, Joanne Kay, Susan Curran and many others. Concerned about the possible negative human health and environmental impacts of pesticide use, they began to make contact with other like-minded people in Oakville. Their small group began to meet over coffee in each other's kitchens and before long Gardens Off Drugs was born. Today they count on thousands of supporters.
